How Group TherapyWorks for Recovery

Group therapy at Virtue Recovery Las Vegas is facilitated by licensed counselors who guide structured discussions and therapeutic exercises with groups of 6 to 12 participants. Unlike casual support groups, clinical group therapy follows evidence-based models and focuses on developing specific skills while processing shared experiences.

Our groups use several therapeutic approaches, including psychoeducation groups that teach the science of addiction and recovery, process groups where members explore emotions and interpersonal patterns in real time, and skills-based groups focused on coping strategies, communication, and relapse prevention.

Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes and occur daily for residential and PHP clients, and 3-5 times per week for IOP participants. Each group has a specific therapeutic focus, so you're not simply "talking about your feelings" — you're building concrete skills and processing your recovery within a structured, clinician-led framework.

What to Expect at Virtue Recovery

Here is what your group therapy experience looks like at our facility.

Many people feel nervous about group therapy before they start — and that's completely normal. At Virtue Recovery Las Vegas, your clinician will talk with you about what to expect before your first group session. Confidentiality is taken seriously: what's shared in group stays in group.

In your first few sessions, you're encouraged to listen and observe before sharing. There is no pressure to disclose anything you're not ready to talk about. Over time, most clients find that the group becomes a powerful source of motivation and accountability. Hearing how others are navigating similar challenges — and being heard yourself — creates a sense of belonging that many people in active addiction have lost.

Group therapy at our Las Vegas facility is integrated with your individual therapy sessions, ensuring that what you work on privately is reinforced in a community setting.

Who Benefits from
Group Therapy

Group therapy benefits virtually everyone in addiction recovery, but it's especially valuable for individuals who have become isolated during active addiction, those who struggle with social anxiety or interpersonal conflict, and people who need accountability and peer support to stay motivated.

Veterans and active-duty service members from Nellis Air Force Base often find that the camaraderie of group therapy mirrors the unit cohesion they valued in military service. Our clinicians are sensitive to the dynamics of mixed civilian and military groups and create a safe space for all participants.

Group Therapy FAQ

Common questions about group therapy for addiction treatment.

What happens in group therapy for addiction?

In group therapy at Virtue Recovery Las Vegas, a licensed clinician facilitates structured discussions and exercises with 6-12 participants. Sessions focus on specific topics like coping skills, relapse prevention, communication, and emotional processing. Members share experiences, provide feedback, and practice new skills in a confidential, supportive environment.

What are the benefits of group therapy for substance abuse?

Group therapy reduces isolation, builds accountability, and provides peer support — all of which are critical for recovery. Research shows that group therapy is as effective as individual therapy for many aspects of addiction treatment, and the social connections formed in group often become a lasting part of a person's recovery network.

Is group therapy confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is a foundational rule in all clinical group therapy sessions at Virtue Recovery Las Vegas. Members agree to keep what is shared in group private. Our clinicians reinforce this expectation at every session. The trust built through confidentiality is what makes group therapy effective.

How is group therapy different from AA or NA meetings?

Clinical group therapy is led by a licensed therapist and follows evidence-based therapeutic models with specific treatment goals. AA and NA are peer-led mutual support groups without a clinical facilitator. Both are valuable, but group therapy provides professional guidance, structured interventions, and integration with your broader treatment plan. Many people benefit from participating in both.
